Be A Runner

Flag Relayers

Volunteer to run or jog for a one mile leg (3 miles max.) along a designated route with a partner, each person carrying a U.S. Flag = 3 x 5 feet in size on a small aluminum pole.  A preferred Flag Relaying Partner can be arranged with the Segment Coordinator or a partner can be assigned via the registration process, if a participant doesn’t already have a particular partner in mind.

Flag Relayers should arrive in the general area of their assigned one mile leg approximately 30 minutes prior to the anticipated arrival of the flags at their route marker and should be at their specific spot at least 15 minutes prior to the projected arrival of the flag.  As it is impossible to determine the exact pace of the flag’s movement during the Flag Relay, location updates will be passed via Facebook, or texted via cell phone, to participants as the flag crosses certain milestones such as 10 mile intervals or other major markers.  Any unexpected delays will be communicated in the same manner.

Once Flag Relayers meet the flag at their designated route marker and relay it to the next marker they will be relieved by the next pair of flag relayers. Flag Relayers will then have to walk back to their vehicle near their starting point or can pre-park vehicles at each end of their designated portion.
