
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
LOCAL SUPPORT TEAM ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Segment Coordinators (VSC) – Take charge/lead in coordinating all related activities and responsibilities associated with supporting local communities; individual participants in conducting the NMDFR 2025 event across a designated flag segment. Primary activities include local event promotion, recruiting volunteer participants, organizing efforts, facilitating logistical support and a brief “Starter’s Ceremony.”- CLICK HERE FOR FULL RESPONSIBILTY CHECKLIST
Safety Driver & Assistant VSC – Drive the safety vehicle on the day of the event remaining 3-4 car links behind the flag relayers, promote safe participation; respond to any emergent hazards; as well as be prepared to take charge/lead (if the primary VSC cannot do so -- SEE VSC Job Description) in coordinating all related activities; responsibilities associated with supporting local communities individual participants in conducting the NMDFR 2025 Event across designated flag segment. Safety Runner(s) – Ride in the SAFETY VEHICLE (follow vehicle) back seat on the day of the event and be prepared to hop out of vehicle to run/jog in a situation where flag carriers are not present to accept the flag at a flag hand off (FHO)/transition point, or in the case of when a runner/jogger is injured unexpectedly and cannot continue their portion of the relay. NOTE: The SAFETY RUNNER should be in excellent condition in case multiple miles of participation are required during a segment. If no support miles are required during the segment, the SAFETY RUNNER can exit the vehicle and run/jog the last mile or two of the segment with other flag carriers. Photographer/Facebook Agent – Ride in the roving vehicle (2nd vehicle) on the day of the event, moving along the route to take pictures with a phone camera (or other digital camera) at each flag hand off (FHO)/transition point as feasible prior to and as flag carriers make FHO and post pictures to the designated Flag#/Segment Facebook event page as much as possible through the event. Roving Driver –Drive the roving vehicle (2nd vehicle) on the day of the event, move along the route in support of the photographer; rendering assistance in an emergency situations by calling 9-11 (if necessary) and remaining with the situation until help arrives. Share event info of your social media for others to see & share
Influence local leaders to support
Encourage communities/locals along proposed route to participate
Line the NMDFR National Route @ approximate times to wave U. S. Flags as Flag Relayers pass
Route Encouragers – Volunteer to stand along the identified route and cheer Flag Relayers carrying the flags through the community. Encouragers are invited to wave a small U.S. Flag, salute or place their hand over their heart as Flag Relayers pass. If Encouragers cannot participate along the identified route as the flags pass, they are encouraged to display their patriotism and support by carrying/waving a U.S. Flag through their own neighborhoods during the day as time permits.
Local Resource Partners – Volunteer to assist community participants, particularly Segment Coordinators, in organizing and identifying resources to conduct the Memorial Day Flag Relay in their local area. Recommend connecting with city/town officials, Chamber of Commerce, military units, churches and other organizations.
