BECOME A FLAG RELAYER
Flag Relayers
REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 1 , 2025!
FLAG RELAYERS’ JOB DESCRIPTION: Flag Relayers volunteer to run or jog in pairs of two for one mile (no more than 3 consecutive miles) at a pace of 10-12 minutes per mile carrying one U. S. Flag on a light-weight aluminum pole.
The Volunteer Segment Coordinator may add a second flag, the “We Support Our Troops”flag for each mile along the segment. A preferred Flag Relaying Partner can be arranged with the Volunteer Segment Coordinator or a partner can be assigned via the registration process, if a participant doesn’t already have a chosen relay partner in mind.
Flag Relayers should arrive in the general area of their assigned one-mile leg approximately 30 minutes prior to the anticipated arrival of the U. S. Flag at their route marker and should be at their specific spot at least 15 minutes prior to the projected arrival of the flag. As it is impossible to determine the exact pace of the flag’s movement during the Flag Relay, flag location will be passed to relay participants via text updates and Facebook. Updates will be sent by the Volunteer Segment Coordinator (VSC) as a flag crosses certain milestones such as 5 mile intervals or other major markers. Any unexpected delays will be communicated in the same manner.
Once flag relayers meet the flag at their designated route marker and relay it to the next marker, they will be relieved by the next pair of flag relayers. Flag Relayers will then have to walk or jog back to their vehicle near their starting point, or can pre-park vehicles at each end of their designated portion. No return shuttle to your starting point will be provided by the Local Support Team (LST).
